Clara Hughes Skating with Fans in Oshawa - A Night to Remember! by

Journal Notes

After a great time in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, including talks with students and goats* at the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate School, Clara Hughes rolled into Oshawa today for the 8th day of her Canada-wide tour.

The 41 year old athlete hit the ice at 7 p.m. along side hundreds of fans from the region. I myself will be in the Oshawa region tomorrow for a volleyball tournament and I most definitely will be keeping an eye out for the 6 time Olympian and her team.

The event went a little over schedule as Clara was having a great time on her second home, “the rink”. Eventually, the Zamboni had to clear the ice, literally, so the Bell Let’s Talk team took the party outside. Fans continued to have a great time with Clara well into the night while receiving speeches and information from “Ontario Shores”.

The Oshawa visit and 104 km ride to get there was quite a success, and Clara was very happy with its turnout. The night was filled with yet another slew of surprises including guest performances and appearances by celebrities including four-time Juno award-winning singer-songwriter Dan Clancy, lead singer of the Canadian group Lighthouse, Toronto Maple Leaf players and others. This part of the Big Ride did not go without more gifts given to Clara. She received a shirt with a personally designed “stigma is isolation” logo and a variety of cards and artwork from youth.

*Clara had the chance to meet up with students and the goats that they raised in a farming and agriculture project.
