Journal Notes

On April 23rd, Clara Hughes will host her third community skate in the glorious town of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland. Clara will share her passion for this sport with hundreds of fans from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium.

This free event will raise awareness for mental health and the importance of staying connected with your community and passions. In addition, the night will be filled with prizes, speeches and special performances by the Sparkling Blades and many others. The Sparkling Blades Group is the Grand-Falls Windsor community Skating Club formed of many talented local champions.

The town of Grand-Falls Windsor has a population of just a little more than 13,000 over a small surface area of 55 square kilometers. The town is an amalgamation of the former town of Grand Falls and the city of Windsor, Newfoundland. It is situated about an hour from Gander, so Clara Hughes will not have too far to travel for her next couple of stops.

Grand-Falls Windsor is known across the province for its many attractions. These include a variety of museums, rafting sites and the Corduroy Brook Nature Trail. The town also has a lot of sport related locations for its athletes including 2 Stadiums, a cross country ski trail, several softball and baseball fields, walking trails and sport complexes. Grand-Falls Windsor is also no stranger to great leisure facilities that offer swimming programs, yoga, golfing, running and card games.
