Sherbrooke, Quebec – 133 Kilometre Bike ride for Clara Hughes Alongside her Mentor/Hero and Fellow O by

Journal Notes

Clara Hughes was accompanied by a very special person when cycling the 133 km from Montréal to Sherbrooke, Québec on March 28th. This special someone, was none other than her childhood idol Gaétan Boucher. Gaétan was an Olympic skater back in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 1000 m speed skate at lake Placid during the 1980 Olympics. At Sarajevo in the 1984 winter Olympics, Gaétan Boucher placed third in the 500 m speed skate and won the gold medal in both the 1000 and 1500 meter events.

It was during these four years, Clara became an avid fan of the athlete and promised herself to train and become just like him. In addition, she also decided to break away from her depression and mental health problems and battle for her happiness and that of others. Twenty years later, I am happy to say that she has gone through amazing feats and achieved this goal tenfold!

The two Olympic medalists braved cold temperatures and experienced the worst weather to date on Clara’s Big Ride. That being said, the pair did not complain and were ready to confront the stormy skies and thick flurries. They arrived at the Canadian Tire Store in Sherbrooke, Québec at 3 p.m. and were greeted by hundred of fans that also braved the cold to meet up with their idols.

Afterwards, she cycled solo to the Julien Ducharme Center where she met with even more adoring fans that were excited for the highly anticipated event. The night settled at 10 p.m., an hour later than schedule.
