Habit of Healthy

Words from the Founder
Dear Life Enthusiasts:
Hello everyone and welcome to our July edition of Alpha Insights. A few days ago on June 21st, we welcomed summer here in the northern Hemisphere. For many, this date sets the mind thinking of summer vacations and adventures that you will take with family and friends. It also marks the time that most people start enjoying all the wonderful activities that can be more fully enjoyed during these beautiful warm weather months.

I, for one, pulled out my bike last weekend for the first time in several months, and just biking for 2 straight days was enough to make my backside feel as sore as though I had not been in the saddle for years… (Personal note to self – Not just Elliptical and Stairmaster, but also keep biking in the gym during winter months)

For many people, it is also a time to start and try new things, sports, activities, etc. For others, like myself, it is a time to switch up their routines from what they normally do during the winter. Whether you are on summer break from school or taking the long awaited summer vacation that you have been accumulating days for at work; most of you will be away from your structured lifestyles of regular gym time and exercise regiments that are offered either at school or your Wellness Programs provided at work.

Summer may also be what many of you have been waiting for to get back into some healthy lifestyle habits. Either way, we thought it would be a good idea to go over and review all the components involved in… The Habit of Healthy:

The Habit of being and thinking Healthy can be focusing on only one thing for many people; however, it is important to consider that there are indeed a number of factors that revolve around the well-balanced lifestyle of a Healthy Person.

However, Healthy Habits are not something you pick up today and forget about tomorrow. Health and Wellness is an all year long Habit. It is a lifestyle. It is something that you practice every day, and that is why we are calling it the Habit of Healthy!
Did You Know This Month…

July is National Ice Cream Month. Established in 1984 by President (and ice cream lover) Ronald Reagan to celebrate the popularity of the tasty dessert.

The signing of the Declaration of Independence took place July 4th, 1776. Although American’s have been celebrating Independence Day since 1777, it was not made an official national holiday until 1870. It is now celebrated with hot dogs, fireworks, and parades.

July 4 is also Independence Day in the Philippines and Rwanda.

The unofficial color for July is RED. It's not uncommon for red theme parties to take place during the month of July. Red party foods include apples, red Jello, tomato dishes, lasagna, strawberries, watermelon, pizza, red velvet cake, beet salad and we can't leave out salsa!

This lifestyle of becoming, being and staying healthy involves what you eat, how you exercise and how you think. My friends laugh at me because 10 years ago, Healthy Habits or HH for me, used to be Heineken and Hennessey . But today, it all boils down to “Making the right choices!” And, since everything you do “Repeatedly and Consistently” becomes a Habit – I Now Choose Healthy Habits such as: Great Eating Habits, Great Exercise Habits and Great Thinking Habits!

None of these are really rocket science, and all you need to do is start off with one thing that contributes to your Health and Wellness. When that one thing comes naturally to you, move on to another. Before you know it, you are living a life with a layout of proper rules (Habits) which when all put together will push you towards a life of fulfillment and happiness.

(Special cut out section below)

Healthy Habits = Healthy Life and Provides Energy for Excellence.

Healthy Habits will allow me to do more, achieve more and become more.

Healthy Habits - Repeatedly and Consistently:

Healthy Habits usually only happen one step at a time. It’s rarely a sudden leap to greatness.

Lasting success lies in taking consistent action every day.

Greatness doesn't happen in a day…it happens daily.

When you combine consistent FOCUS with consistent ACTION…you will succeed and achieve great RESULTS.

So watch and exercise to fitness videos that capture your attention. Take the stairs even when there is an elevator available for use and walk a few blocks even when you have your car sitting in the drive way.

Before leaving you, I would like to wish a Happy Canada Day this coming July 1st to our friends in the north, and a very happy and safe July 4th to all here!

Thanks again for joining us. I look forward to seeing you all in August.

In the meantime remember to always Dream Big, and Dream Often.

Family Road Trip Tips

Taking a trip in the family vehicle can cause lots of stress but it can also be very rewarding if given enough in the way of forward planning. One good tip is to make certain from the very beginning that there is a certain itinerary set up.

That does not mean that absolutely everything has to be planned right down to the last minute, but having certain goals established for travelling is important. Work out how the trip is going to go before you set off.

It is also a good idea to make use of technology and examine your route carefully. The entire world is at your fingertips these days thanks to the internet. You can check out major and side roads as well as look for attractions that your family might enjoy and rest stops along the way.

Sleeping arrangements should also be pre-planned. Once you have established an itinerary then, you should make reservations at a suitable campground, motel or hotel in advance.

Double check those reservations before you commence your trip and make sure you have your confirmation information in the car with you just in case of any problems.

The Funny Thing About Memory

Memory can be a funny thing, leaving us with tiny details from events in our childhood and yet unable to remember where we put the car key.

There are a number of different kinds of memory, and the mind has different methods of forgetting for all of them!

One of the most common yet strange examples of short term memory failure is people who go to a different room only to then forget why they went in there in the first place.

According to researchers, the blame actually lies with the doorway itself as the very act of walking through it tells the brain that it has started a different scene and thus should put away previous memories, thereby resulting in some funny lapses of memory.

Walking through a doorway serves as a kind of event boundary within the brain, which then separates instances of activity and compartmentalizes them, thus making it difficult to recall the decision to enter the room as it was made in a different room, even if only just a minute or so earlier.

One Small Asteroid Puts a Ring On It

The planet Saturn is known for its spectacular rings, along with other gas giants like Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus in our solar system. Until recently scientists had observed rings only around large celestial bodies, but in a surprising discovery by the European Southern Observatory, a small, distant asteroid named Chariklo has been found to possess two dense, thin rings of its own.

Chariklo orbits the sun between Saturn and Uranus, and is about 155 miles in diameter. It’s classified as a “centaur,” one of a group of small objects with unstable orbits that share characteristics of both asteroids and comets. The origin of its newly discovered rings is unknown, but astronomers speculate they may have been formed from a collision with another body, creating a circle of debris.

Tips for Staying Motivated

Making a decision to do something is one thing, but following through on it is quite another. Whether it is going on a diet, taking up regular exercise or anything else, getting motivated and then staying motivated for the duration can be a difficult task but there are some tips that can make it easier.

One good tip is to rope in friends and family members. If you can get other people involved it is much easier to stay motivated and much harder to find excuses to avoid doing the thing that you have all set out to do.

Sticking to the activity also becomes easier as more time passes and it becomes a habit and second nature to keep at it. Memories of past successes also further helps with motivation.

Another good tip is to set your goals and visualize achieving them. Write down your goal and put it on the fridge so that there is a constant reminder of what you want to succeed at. Remember you can do all these things at

just simply believe.” ~ Tiffany Loren Rowe
