Habit of NO Excuses

Words From the Founder
Dear Life Enthusiasts:
Welcome to our April edition of Alpha Insights and this month's focus is on the "Habit of NO Excuses".

First a little housekeeping - For those of you that have been receiving Alpha Insights for some time, you will notice that we have changed the date we are sending our emails to Friday. We did this at the request of our readers.

You told us that you wanted to enjoy reviewing the newsletter over the weekend, and have more time to discuss some of the articles with your loved ones. Some also said you wanted to set some of our daily habits into your calendars for that month. How can we say no to such great reasons? Good for you... Now that's Kick'n It!

We really do love hearing from you, and we take your recommendations seriously, so from now on, we will be send our newsletter before the last weekend of each month. This will give you plenty of time to print it, review it over the weekend, and prepare for a Kick'n month ahead.

So now that this is said, can you believe that we are already entering the second quarter of 2014? How is everything going with the dreams and goals you set for yourselves at the beginning of the year?

The most important part about staying on track and moving forward is to constantly be monitoring your progress. This should be done weekly and even monthly for some projects, but everyone should at least be reviewing their dreams, goals, strategies and efforts at least once at the end of each quarter.

It is the perfect time to take a look back at what you've done over the past three months, see what is working and what is not, and to make adjustments in your plans for the next 3 months. You should always have a bunch of goals and dreams that you are working on. There should be some short, medium and long term goals as well as some small and some very big dreams.
Did You Know This Month...

April 13-19 is the nation's largest celebration of environmental education. It's held each year the week before Earth Day (April 22). The 2014 theme, "Greening STEM: Engineering a Sustainable World," explores the application of engineering to sustainable solutions for a healthier planet and healthier people.
- - -
Many will celebrate April Fool's Day on April 1st. But, don't be cruel. It's meant to be a day of light-hearted fun, not heartache.
- - -
April 15th is Tax Day. It's not exactly a holiday, but a very important day you shouldn't forget.
- - -
National Walk to Work Day is April 4th. Make your heart happy and join the celebration. Walk all or at least part of the way to work, aiming for 15 minutes each way.
- - -
The Easter Bunny is preparing for April 20th which is the celebration of Easter this year.
Monthly Quote

"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there's love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong."

- Ella Fitzgerald

For many of us, this quarterly review is a time where we notice how far off we might be from what we had originally set our minds on for some of these dreams. The important part here to understand is that it is something that will happen to all of us, at one time or another, when we have and set lofty dreams. It is simply a time to re-evaluate and see how you can get back on track.

Remember, that the Danger is not to Set Your Dreams too High and not Achieve Them... But Rather... It's to set them too low and to reach Them!!!

Finance Tips For College Grads

The job market is a difficult one today, and many parents are concerned for the financial future of children who may just be about to graduate from college and enter the workforce - or try to.

Knowing how to deal with finances is a key aspect of being an adult. If you are concerned as a parent that your soon to be graduate is not knowledgeable enough on the subject, then it might be a good idea to buy them a book on personal finance, especially if it is specifically aimed at their demographic.

Even if they do not read the whole thing, just skimming through it once or twice is likely to give them food for thought. Because they are in college, they are already in "learning mode" means they are even more likely to actually take this information in.

It is also a good idea to get them to start drafting a budget.

Even if they do not yet have a job lined up post-graduation, putting them into the mindset of knowing what they can expect in the future will pay dividends.

Big dreams take time, and you should never give up. "99% of failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses." -- George Washington Carver

That is why people with a Living Alpha personality choose to have the "Habit of NO Excuses!"

(Special cut out section below)

Habit of NO Excuses!

NO EXCUSES is about accepting 100% responsibility for my commitments, and never making excuses about what I do, or don't do, in pursuit of excellence.

Making excuses is the enemy of success and achievement.

Making excuses has been called a "Personality Defect" and can be a very damaging disease that can hold me back from reaching my full potential.

I adopt a NO EXCUSES POLICY in my life.

The next time I catch myself about to make an excuse... I repeat one of the following quotes 10 times.

"If I can't, I must...if I must, I will!"

"There are thousands of excuses for every failure, but never a good reason." -- Mark Twain

My favorite though is: "There is no TRY... Just Do" - Yoda

Thanks again for joining us. I look forward to seeing you all in May.

In the meantime remember to always Dream Big, and Dream Often.

Sincerely,

Alan McBrearty

Turning Inspiration Into Reality

Many people come up with big ideas at some point in life, but the dream never comes to fruition, often hindered by a lack of confidence, credibility and above all capital. However this is actually starting to change. Big ideas are starting to gain a better chance of becoming reality thanks to the unique 21st century phenomenon known as online crowd-funding. It began as a mere handful of websites that promoted the pet projects of individuals but has now become hundreds of different platforms that serve as methods for fundraising, as well as market research and product development.

Strategy and stamina are needed for crowd-funding to succeed, though sincerity can also play a big part. Most crucial however is that most simple yet simultaneously difficult of things - the good idea. A bad idea will not take off regardless of the slickness of presentation, but a good one now has a good chance of becoming reality even if you start off with nothing else.

Preparing For An Exam

Making sure that you are properly prepared for an exam is something that passes through the minds of all students, and the good news is there are plenty of good methods to help you do so.

One method is to join a good quality coaching institute. Going to classes regularly and diligently at a reputable and credible coaching institute can go a long way to meeting a student's needs.

It is natural to be anxious and tense prior to taking an exam, but you also need to be able to remain composed and calm so as to be able to deliver your best performance.

If you are well prepared and yet are verging on panic when the exam comes, this is not a rational response and it would be a very good idea for you to learn and practice a few easy meditation exercises on a regular basis.

This not only serves to help you to remain calm but can also boost your reasoning skills and your memory retention.

Those First Days On The Job

When you finally get that new job in the company that you really want to work for, you will be understandably nervous and not know exactly what to expect or how you should behave in this strange new environment. The first 90 days in your new job are crucial and you need to make sure to make the best possible impression.

One good tip is simply to keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is natural when starting somewhere new to try and make your employers aware of everything you know, but this could give the wrong impression and saddle you with an unwanted "know it all" reputation. Keep your lips sealed during the learning phase.

Write down the names of everyone you meet and include your gut reaction to them as well as profile information.

There are always a number of hierarchies at play inside of any organization and it is vital to get to know and understand them, while avoiding sharing too much personal information with your new colleagues.

Healthy Eating On The Go

It can be tough to travel and meet your nutritional needs, but there are some simple ways to make smart choices and eat healthily even when on the go.

Healthy snacks are of vital importance!

There is no word in the English language that rhymes with "month."

When we are tired and hungry it is easy to give into temptation and have that burger or that chocolate bar on the counter. Instead of falling into this trap, stock up on healthy foods in order to make sure you do not reach this point.

Dried fruit and unsalted mixed nuts make a satisfying and healthy snack, as do raw vegetable sticks. Staying hydrated is also crucial. This can be tough to accomplish while travelling and dehydration results in feelings of fatigue. No matter what happens, always carry a water bottle and have a drink whenever you feel thirsty.

Staying Fit After 50

Many people of a certain age assume that they are too old, too tired or too sick to be able to get proper exercise and instead end up avoiding it entirely. However, the reality is that not exercising is the real danger to health.

Muscle strength can be increased, bone density preserved, and overall health and balance can be improved at any age.

Age has nothing to do with it - sensible and regular exercise do.

As people get into their 50s and even older, it becomes more vital to include balance exercises and stretching into any routine. Bodies do not wind down or warm up as quickly as they get older, so adults over the age of fifty should warm up for a minimum of five minutes before commencing a full workout so as to loosen tendons and increase the blood flow to muscles.

Many people have no idea how to devise a healthy diet so it is not a bad idea to consult a registered dietitian that can get you on the right meal and nutrition plan for you and keep you motivated.

"First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. It is important to look at the beginning of the process again, and as you will observe, this process starts with a thought in your imagination" ~ Napoleon Hill

That is why at Alpha we like to say that Dreams you set... are Dreams you get.
